The Summer of Art!

Ahead is quite a busy summer.  There is a nice mix over the next few months that might take your fancy to put in the diary.

  • Trowbridge Town Hall Open: 30th June – 2 September, 10am – 4pm.  I have a piece in the Town Hall’s first Open.  A grand building increasingly getting a name for itself as a good creative venue.  www.trowbridgearts.com for info.
  • Romsey Festival InsideOut Art Trail: 2nd July 10am – 4pm.  It’s not far!  The event kicks off the Festival and I am in the Abbey Hall.  It is a once-every-three-years happening with free parking on Sunday.  See www.romseyfestival.org for more info.
  • Black Swan Art Car Boot, Frome: 16th July 10am – 4pm.  Taking place in the Old Cattle Market car park, the Art Car Boot is great fun to do and this will be my third time.  I am bringing along work with special reductions in the renowned Blue Van Gallery.  See www.fromefestival.co.uk for all details.
  • Maiden Bradley Arts Festival: 26th, 27th and 28th August, 10am – 4pm.  For the Bank Holiday weekend, the Village Hall opens its doors to an eclectic range of artists – and I am one of them!  A nice and easy art event to come and enjoy.

Once again I shall be exhibiting at Lakeside Garden Centre in Crockerton, Venue 29, with full details on the excellent website www.wvat.co.uk  It is my seventh Trail!

Cyanotypes created specifically for the Trail include some nursery rhymes developed on some of my grandmother’s handkerchiefs, a few having lace edging made by her.

Sea Fever by John Masefield is a favourite poem that continues to stir me and I have taken lines to produce a series inspired by it.

Finally, I have inherited a quantity of oil paints from my father when he owned an art shop and the showcase of the Trail makes me explore their potential.  Whilst it is not a medium I know well, there will be some new journeys which will be expressive, textured and the results of taking risks!

I will also mention that my cyanotype cards are on sale at Hauser and Wirth, Bruton, Somerset.  I was given the opportunity to use some of the plants from Piet Oudolf’s prairie scheme so the cards have a direct link with this wonderful garden.  I am thrilled to have my work under the same roof as, currently, Elisabeth Frink!

Devizes Christmas Market

I am just doing one event this year and not joining the stampede into Bath – for the first time in five years!  Instead I am participating in the Devizes Christmas Market at the Corn Exchange (next to The Bear Hotel) in the town centre and will be there from 2.30 – 8.30pm on Friday 25th November.  There will also be the wonderful Lantern Festival taking place in the town that evening so you can come into the Market and then witness the amazing visual treats that light up the night!

Finally, dates for your shiny new diaries:  you may like to note that 2017 has the Wylye Valley Art Trail (27th May – 4th June) taking place at my regular venue of the Lakeside Garden Centre in Crockerton.

I shall be at the Friends’ Meeting House, York Street, Bath  BA1 1NG (opposite the Abbey Square), from 10am – 6pm for all three of the Craft Fair dates which are Saturday 28th November and Saturday 5th and 12th December.  This is the fourth year I have been there and it has become a comfortable venue away from the busy streets and stalls that form the outside German Market in central Bath.  We are all individual artists and makers so you are guaranteed to find something different.

I shall have the cyanotype work which has moved on again!  Plus collage landscapes and other paintings.

The Wylye Valley Art Trail is open!

Here is my work at Venue 71, Lakeside Garden Centre, Crockerton – a successful first day.

The countdown has begun!

The beautiful month of May is being punched and slapped by powerful winds and, with the Trail on the horizon and getting nearer, I am wanting a different weather for the cyanotypes!!!  I obviously am wanting clear blue skies for the process but, just as importantly, warmer night temperatures because until they just jolly well buck and move all growth is slowed and kept in check.  Mind you, it is what also gives us longer lasting blossom ….  In the meantime, painting another Landline.

Wylye Valley Art Trail 2015

The dates for this year’s Wylye Valley are Saturday 23rd May until Sunday 31st May.  Once again I shall be at the Lakeside Garden Centre, Crockerton, on the A350 just outside Warminster.  As in the 2013 Trail I will be exhibiting with Jules Horn, Maggie Port and Jane Gibson.  As an added part of our exhibition, on Friday 29th May 2.30pm – 3.30pm there is Art Chat! where all four of us will be at the garden centre to talk about our work so, a nice opportunity to catch us all.  All details will be on the Trail website shortly and usually by early April, hard copies of the brochure are available.  www.wvat.co.uk

This will be my sixth trail so I am feeling a veteran!  I shall have mixed media landscapes and the cyanotypes are evolving even  more and there will be layered, torn works which were well received last December.  I shall be at the venue on both Saturdays as well as other times but do let me know if you would like to meet up.

Bath Christmas Markets 2014

The dates for the Christmas selling of my work are Saturday 29th November and Saturday 13th December and once again I shall be at the Friends’ Meeting House, York Street, Bath  BA1 1NG (opposite the Abbey Square), from 10am – 7pm.

Work includes another range of Colourblock brooches which, this time, use a subtler palette of handmade papers and the shapes were inspired by a recent visit to Salvadore Dali’s museum in Figueres, Northern Spain.  I was not drawn to the Surrealists at the time of studying history of art but Dali’s ‘nuclear fusion’ period where things seem to float, by atomic reconstruction almost, lead me on to abstract shapes.  Abstract via surrealism – who’d have thought it!  Here is a selection:

I do rather like naming ranges – giving work identities – so also on show are Landlines.  These are 5” square originals (unframed) done in mixed media of tracks and contours, shapes and landforms that attract me from places I have been to in Wiltshire and Dorset.  And finally, there are the deep, deep blue cyanotypes of a wide range of plants.  I am still on that journey …

The Bath German Christmas Market is on at the same time and is a dominating event, making the City very busy but the Friends’ Meeting House is a much calmer space, indoors and refreshments will be available to restore, away from the masses.

If any of you are in Bath on those two days, do come and say hello.

Wishing you all warmth and health for 2015 and seasonal good cheer.
